Media Centre Remote

I have a Windows Media Centre running on a Windows7 PC located in the lounge. As it runs the main household television it’s very important it works (I think my wife would hold me to a Service Level Agreement if she could).

When it stopped working the other day we went back to using the emergency mouse. Dunno why it died, changed batteries, cleaned the terminals and still nothing.

After a couple of days of this I was informed today that it had better work or the whole MCE would no longer be the device of choice in the lounge. A quick surf online revealed that its possible to perform a reset of the remote by shorting the across the positive and negative battery terminals towards the top of the remote with a paperclip. I duly put another new set of batteries in (as I’d nicked the first lot for a torch that had failed), lo and behold it works and I’d not even done the short. What gives…?
